In the past desastrous fires in Doessel occurred as well time and again. This was caused by several reasons: wars and feuds, for lack of space densely built houses, primitive fire-fighting equipment (leather buckets), thatched roofs and open fireplaces contributed to the outbreak and spreading of fires. When moving into the village apart from the admission fee everyone had to bring along a leather bucket. Every villager contributed to the duty fire fighting.
As early as 1769 under the reign of Prince Bishop Wilhelm Anton (of Paderborn) a fire-insurance was founded. In 1818 for Doessel the total amount of insurance was 7,500 for Riepen Manor, 13,915 for the village and 2,100 Taler for the church, the vicarage and the school building.
The chronicle reports on fires in the years 1819, 1829, 1830, 1850, 1872, 1874, 1895, 1900 and 1904. In 1850 36 buildings and in 1872 25 buildings were destroyed by big fires.
In 1880 the department administration attempted in vain
to transform the duty fire-fighting into a volunteer’s fire-brigade. It
was hoped for a better readiness for action.

After the Second World War new life was put into the fire-brigade. In 1961 Anton Boehlen became chief of the fire-brigade. A portable fire-engine type TS 8/8 was bought in 1962, a new fire-engine vehicle in 1971, a new heavy-duty fire-engine in 1993. In 1970 a new fire-engine shed was added to the community Boerde hall. Since 1995 a common room is situated in the old school building.

On the occasion of the municipal reorganization the volunteer’s fire-brigade was incorporated as fire-fighting department Doessel into the volunteer’s fire-brigade Warburg. Since 1985 Heribert Emmerich is the chief of the fire-fighting department Doessel.
